The Mist

After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice.

The creepiest movie I have ever seen.

The opening was a little uneven, but once The Mist settles upon the town, and people start dying in horrifying ways, the tension starts to mount and it never stops. There is very little music in the film, which is a good thing: I don't think I would've found the tension quite so palpable if the scares had been telegraphed ahead of time.

I don't remember reading The Mist, but I found the ending to be both shocking and absolutely appropriate. Not shocking in a typical horror-movie way, but in a deep, tragic, existential way; the movie sets up the ending fairly and director Frank Darabont earns every bit of its conclusive pathos.

That being said, though a few of the special effects didn't quite work for me, most of them were absolutely convincing, and were far scarier than anything I've seen in years. I literally jumped out of my seat a couple of times. And there are several scenes that have stuck in my mind so completely I doubt I'll ever be able to get them out. This is a hard movie to watch, not for the squeamish, nor for anyone expecting a happy-go-lucky Hollywood ending. But in its unique way, "The Mist" might be the best horror movie since... ever.

A Major Achievement in Horror Film

The Mist is a grainy, hauntingly effective, perfectly casted, take on one of Stephen King's most cherished stories. This is at once both a scary movie and a surprisingly complex film that touches on very human elements of courage under adversity, loss of hope, redemption, and damnation.
