In the far Northern Hemisphere, the small town of Barrow, Alaska, experiences a solid month of darkness every year. Though most of the residents head south for the winter, some townspeople remain behind. However, those that stay regret their decision when, one year, hungry vampires descend on Barrow to feed. Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his wife (Melissa George) and a dwindling band of survivors must try to last until dawn breaks over Barrow's monthlong twilight.

I like my vampires with a touch more style and brains mixed in with the raw animalness. To me, these vampires seemed overly brutish and not terribly bright. A missed opportunity to have a cleverer hunter to hunt naive and over confident humans. That would be scary.
I would have also liked to have seen more hints of an old vampire culture. The vampire back story is what makes vampires more interesting than your average monster.
It didn't make sense to me that such powerful beings would invade a little Alaskan town for such slim pickings.
This film doesn't fully solve the problem of how to portray the night environment on film. If it's too dark, then the audience can't see anything, but if it's too light, then the edginess of the night is lost. This didn't work for me.
In short, "30 Days of Night" is more of an action horror film rather than a thinking person's horror film, which is fine if that's your guilty pleasure.

I have to agree with Gordon.
Nice review by the way...
Loved the odd language of the vamps, a mixture of alien - Transylvanian and a bit of gibberish.
Quite convincing.
Special effects well done.
Loved the ending.
Leave the kids home, bloody, but in a good way.

Skillfully mixing elements of John Carpenter's "The Thing", 28 Days Later, Zach Snyder's remake of "Dawn of the Dead" and gothic horror themes, 30 Days of Night really delivers the goods. Well chosen cast with solid, gritty, performance, from all the actors makes this a real treat for the horror movie enthusiast.
