Surfing means everything to teenage penguin Cody Maverick (Shia LaBeouf). Followed by a documentary film crew, he leaves his home in Antarctica for Pen Gu Island, site of the the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. Cody wants to be respected and admired, and he believes that winning the competition will bring him what he craves. However, an encounter with washed-up surfer Geek (Jeff Bridges) teaches Cody about what is truly important.

on Surf's Up
Incredible animation but OK story line
I took my 4-year-old to see this and we really enjoyed it, but her thoughts walking out of the theater sums it up best - "it wasn't Happy Feet." I think the PG rating is right, but not for the language or humor. The plot is a spoof on reality shows and documentaries that are a little over a 4-year-old' head.
Surf's Up is definitely entertaining for the adults and probably best suited for kids age 6-8.

"Surf's Up" has only one point of overlap with "Happy Feet": the penguins. Whereas last year's Oscar-winning animated feature clobbered audiences with sound, tap, fury and 70 tons of pathos, "Surf's Up" is just a slip of a thing, derivative but mellow, about a teenage surfer from the penguin burg of Shiverpool, Antarctica, who ventures to the tropics to compete with the big kahunas of the flightless aviary endless-summer set.
