Finding one such letter from 1957, Sophie decides to write to its now elderly author, Claire (Vanessa Redgrave). Inspired by Sophie's actions, Claire sets out to find her long-lost lover, accompanied by her disapproving grandson (Christopher Egan) and Sophie.

Huge miscommunication going on here. The fiance was in Italy to find unique cooking recipes/wine to get his restaurant noticed. The girlfriend was not interested in any of this (seemed to forget their futures would be entertwined, also their finances so she should have been interested).Since they have been engaged for a year, the bloom had gone off the rose in this case. She fell for the first guy who paid any attention to her. It happens.
