Officially inaugurated in 1967 and named after the founder of Montreal, Paul de Chomedy, Sieur de Maisonneuve, Théâtre Maisonneuve is a modern-day rendition of a classical Italian theatre. With a seating capacity of 1,458, Théâtre Maisonneuve is the ideal setting for variety shows, particularly comedy performances which often remain on its bill for several weeks. The hall is also a perfect venue for performances by smaller companies and soloists, for musical comedies, and for film presentations. Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, for the contemporary part of their series, the McGill Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal and Société Pro Musica are all permanent residents of Théâtre Maisonneuve. The Danses en Saison series, created by the producers of the Festival international de nouvelle danse and I Musici, recently adopted this hall.
