Old Fisherman's Grotto

39 Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey, CA
(831) 375-4604 - Venue Website

The tiny family eatery founded in the 1950's by Sabu Shake, Sr. has endured and grown into one of the most beloved restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula. Like Fisherman's Wharf, the flagship Shake restaurant has kept up with changing times and tastes and has outlasted almost all of its contemporaries.

Sabu was a hands-on restaurateur of the first order, negotiating daily with local fisherman, purchasing fresh produce from Salinas Valley farmers, and procuring beef directly from cattlemen. Today, because the Monterey area is blessed with proximity to both the Pacific Ocean and the incredibly fertile Salinas Valley, the chef is able to choose from the finest seafood and produce available anywhere.

Chris Shake continues in his father's footsteps, serving innovative, internationally-inspired cuisine in an atmosphere of superb, genuinely warm hospitality.

Such an amazing place!

Wonderful food, wonderful view, friendly staff, did I say good food?

The Fisherman's Grotto has been around for a long time and ther's a good reason for that. They're the BEST! The seafood is so fresh and delicious! I tried the artichoke/calamari (compliments of the owner, Chris), deep fried shrimp, and crab cakes for appetizers. They were delicious!

I tried the candied walnut pear salad, even more delicious and very fresh. For my entree I had the abalone, scallops and prawn with risotto which were TO DIE FOR. Then for dessert I tried the creme brulee which was cooked just right and smooth.

The restaurant also features many of the local Monterey wines which are delicious as well. I loved everything about this place, the view upstairs to the water was great. I went for dinner so it was a bit dark, but if you visit during the day you're bound to see the sea lions out. You might even seen some otters!

After dinner, the staff gives the ladies a rose. What a sweet touch! I saw the little girls at the next table feel like princesses with their rose!

I definitely recommend this place to everyone. Chris, the owner (and some of the watiers) remember you if you go there often, the staff is always nice, the food is superb.. everything is delightful!
