The BIG READ: Social Justice and the Deaf

'The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter' by Carson McCullers is the 2013 BIG READ. Published in 1940, the book is about a deaf man named John Singer and his acquaintances living in a 1930s Georgia mill town. It realistically depicts the lives of the socially excluded and oppressed, and gives voice to their aspirations for equality and social justice.
