The Ritz Theater, designed and built as a movie theater in the mid-1920’s, enjoyed its heyday as a social center in the Sheridan neighborhood of Minneapolis, supporting end enlivening 13th Avenue’s cultural ambiance and serving as a backdrop for the joyful memories of generations of Northeasters.
Now the theater has become a focal point for the preservation of the “small-town” character of 13th Avenue, reaffirming a strong sense of place. Ballet of the Dolls has been leading the charge to renovate the Ritz, a development that has been a catalyst for economic and cultural renewal of this business corridor, propelling and sustaining commercial vitality and residential stability.
With its renovation complete, the Ritz has become a multi-use amenity, lending itself to a vibrant mix of theater, music and dance performances, as well as community events, performance education programs and workshops. The Ritz Theater will again be a part of the cultural life of a strong community, a community in which artists can be a force for development, without fear of being displaced by that development.
