SIBELIUS Pelleas and Melisande 26' Beamish Cello Concerto [World Premiere] 25' Mendelssohn Symphony No. 5, Reformation 33'
Robert Cohen is a household name in his native England, where, as a teenager, he launched an auspicious career with a recording of Elgar's Cello Concerto; this week he brings to Orchestra Hall an exciting work written for him by the English composer Sally Beamish. Mendelssohn is the other star of this concert, with his stirring Symphony No. 5, built on the cherished Reformation hymn A Mighty Fortress. This moving symphony-which Mendelssohn thought one of his best-is a treasure of the orchestral repertoire.
