From Here to Her: Community Workshop Day Afternoon Program

In celebration of Women’s History Month and in collaboration with Studio Lounge’s From Here To Her art exhibit, Alverno College is hosting a day of interactive learning for women in the community. The exhibit’s theme, which questions how feminine beauty and worth are defined in our culture, will be applied across workshop topics ranging from activism to art history.
Because space is limited, we kindly ask that you register online only when you’re sure you’re able to attend.
A discretionary donation… Show more to arts-based youth nonprofit True Skool will be collected at check-in on the day of the event as your registration fee. $5 to 15 is recommended, but not required. Light snacks will be provided and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Representations of Women in Art History : Nancy Lamers — Professor of Art (Alverno) — will engage the audience in discussion of a variety of depictions of women from the ancient to Baroque time periods as well as the social backdrops that influenced their creation. Patronage, the viewer's gaze, the artists' intentions for constructing a role model or moralizing about women's nature and behavior are themes that run through art history. They are also reflected in current representations of women in art, media, fashion and advertising. Who controls how women are represented and do we care? How does it affect us?
Building Bridges from Here to There: An Activism & Poetry Workshop : Margaret Rozga — poet, activist and Professor of English (UW-Waukesha) — will lead an interactive poetry and activist goal-setting workshop that will metaphorically consider Milwaukee's 1967 fair housing marches/16 th Street Viaduct march (led by her late husband, Father James Groppi) and ask how participants might apply them forward: Where are we on this side of the "bridge?" Where do we want to go? What's on that other side? How do we get there?
