Septentrion: Exploring the Arctic Circle

Septentrion, a contemplative look into the adventures of seven participants of The Arctic Circle artist residency program that takes place in Svalbard, Norway. The exhibition runs Friday, January 25 through March 8th, 2012. The opening reception will be held Friday, January 25 from 5 - 8pm with a panel discussion with residency participants at 7pm. All events are held at UAG at 2200 E Kenwood Blvd and are free and open to the public.

Septentrion: Exploring the Arctic Circle features the talents seven bright stars of The Arctic Circle residency program including: Robert Platt, Derek Coté, Stephen Hilyard, Jason Kofke, Kevin Cooley, Leah Beeferman, and Benjamin Bray.

With photography and painting, as well as experimental video, sound and sculpture installations, Septentrion is an experience for the full spectrum of senses. The unique perspective of each artist provides expansive visual stimuli of the calming arctic waters, the unique modus operandi of the current and former residents of the archipelago, and the inspiration that poured forth for each participant after their life-altering experience aboard the tall ship Antigua, their home for the three week residency.

The UAG is thrilled to host three participants from our region for a discussion on life aboard the Antigua, the paradigm shift of experiencing the Arctic, and the ripple effect of inspiration they experienced after completing their journey. UAG welcomes Robert Platt (Ann Arbor, MI), Derek Coté (Detroit, MI), and Stephen Hilyard (Madison, WI) for a discussion on the balance of arctic artist residencies, studio practice, and everything in between.

The Arctic Circle Artist Residency is a nexus where art intersects science, architecture, education, and activism – an incubator for thought and experimentation for artists and innovators who seek out and foster areas of collaboration to engage in the central issues of our time. What transpires is a deluge of cross-cultural immersion and inspiration from both a diverse team of collaborators and a transcendent location unlike any most individuals will ever witness.
