Featuring over 30 prints curated by the organization’s founding members, Per Anderson, Martin Vinaver, and Rafael Ruiz, La Ceiba Gráfica includes an eclectic mix of work by various artists exploring traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques. La Ceiba Gráfica, a printmaking workshop… Show more located in Veracruz, Mexico, was founded in 2005 in order to encourage the creation of art and to contribute to helping the public gain access to the arts and art-making regardless of an individual’s economic situation. The workshop contributes to enriching the lives of the regional community and works towards expanding accessibility to the arts and developing and perfecting the technical knowledge needed in engraving and lithography practices. This exhibition will coincide with the Southern Graphics Council International (SGCI) Conference, the largest printmakers association in North America, expecting to bring up to 2,000 delegates from all 50 states to Milwaukee.
Come to Milwaukee for the SGC International’s 41st conference, Print: MKE. The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) and the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts (PSOA) are partnering to host this exciting event. Mark your calendars for March 20-23, 2013, when MIAD and PSOA will open their facilities for a stimulating and varied program that will recognize making and honor the makers in print.
Print artists make: ink on hands and under nails; drawing, scratching and etching; printmakers work their images over time. Making informs their thinking and thinking informs their making. Their work inspires the viewer, speaks to the public and transforms and inspires the community. Working with materials, tools, machines and emerging technologies, the artist forges and reinvenst the visual language of printmaking.
The field is growing and will always be a rich arena for personal exploration, a process for uncovering one’s visual voice. Its rich tradition is explored through collections of major museums and the many galleries featuring contemporary print exhibitions. Printmaking also encourages communal environments where making invites collaboration. Throughout the country, co-ops and independent presses, pop-up galleries and basement shows, print and zine fests, community events and street art have all raised public awareness and appreciation of print media. In these unique spaces, the power of print often gives voice to people facing economic, political and environmental challenges. Print: MKE celebrates local, national and international printmakers as well as those who have contributed to this democratic medium in other ways.
