Sumi-e is an exciting medium to work in for it encourages spontaneity. The flexibility of the bamboo brush, the fluidity of the ink, and the sensitivity of the thin handmade paper enables a wonderful range of expression. One stroke can have a variety of both tone and texture. There will be an emphasis on expressive and spontaneous brushwork rather than formal technique. Participants are welcome to bring either sketches or paintings in other media that we'll re-interpret in sumi.
