As Arizona's premier professional classical theater company, Southwest Shakespeare Company ("SSC") creates the highest quality productions, contracting the best classically trained actors from Arizona and both coasts. We have been recognized as the "Best Theater Company" by GetOut Magazine and have won dozens of ariZoni Theatre Awards, including five Best Overall Production Awards. In 2009-10, Southwest Shakespeare, the Mesa Arts Center's largest tenant, will mount 99 performances in three of the four theaters at the Mac. Let us introduce You to classical theatre and the works of William Shakespeare. He was meant to be seen on stage, not read in a book!
The Comedy of Errors
Sept. 17 to Oct. 3, 2009 in the Piper Repertory Theater
Shakespeare's farcical onslaught of mistaken identities, fateful romance and family reunions. Not one but two sets of long-separated twins form the springboard to much confusion, slapstick, and surprise as a family that once was lost, but now is found in a strange and wonderful land!
The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (abridged)
by Jess Borgeson, Adam Long, and Daniel Singer
Nov. 28 to Dec. 19, 2009 in the Farnsworth Studio Theater
Get your tickets fast, as this production sold out the last time we produced it! As the Los Angeles Herald wrote, "Shakespeare as written by Reader's Digest, acted by Monty Python, and performed at the speed of the minute waltz."
Julius Caesar
Jan. 7 to Jan. 23, 2010 in the Piper Repertory Theater
Shakespeare's account of the effects of tyranny, assassination, and rebellion on a country and its people is gripping theatre at its best. Based on historical events surrounding the death of Julius Caesar and its aftermath, this play has had meaning through the ages. Directed by Richard Baird.
Blithe Spirit
by Noel Coward
March 4 to March 20, 2010 in the Farnsworth Studio Theater
Writer and society man Charles Condoman, in doing some research for his latest novel on the paranormal, inadvertently conjures up the spirit of his first wife, who proceeds to wreak havoc on his current marriage. Comic mayhem at its best. Featuring Artistic Director Jared Sakren as Madame Arcati.
Richard III
April 22 to May 8, 2010 in the Nesbitt/Elliott Playhouse Theater
This haunting tragedy features one of the Bard's most wicked characters at its center. Spinning out of the whirlwind known as The Wars of the Roses, this story of one man's shocking brutality is a paradox of charm and malevolence, virtuosity and corruption, good and evil. Starring Richard Baird in the title role.
