MiniMUN III is a chance for fifth and sixth graders to have a Model United Nations experience in order to get a taste of what Model United Nations is all about. Students are provided with a guide to the topic which will be discussed/debated, and with a country position statement that explains their country's position on said topic and the reasons for those positions, as well as what solutions their country would be likely to support or to oppose. At the beginning of the conference, students will… Show more be given a brief introduction to the United Nations, and then during the afternoon they will be helped to learn the proces of debate, the rules of Model Un Debate, how to present themselves in debate, how to negotiate and work together, and how to write working papers and resolutions. Opening Ceremonies will be centered around the participants and will be engaging and motivating for them, and Closing Ceremonies will center around a celebration of what they have done during the afternoon.
We are asking for a $30 registration fee to cover our costs (printing, nametags, paper, pens, printer ink, folders, snacks for during the conference, and so forth). However, anyone who would not be able to participate because this fee imposes a burden need simply send us an email and we will register them directly no questions asked, it is an honor system for financial aid. If you can pay part of the fee, send us an email to register and tell us what you can pay, and then send us a check for what you can afford to contribute. Schools, church groups, after school programs, and other community groups should contact us regarding alternative pricing and payment options. Additionally, while it is fine to register and pay via Eventbrite we don't receive those funds til after the conference, so we would be even happier to receive an email registration followed by a mailed check; checks can be mailed to Armun, c/o Kim Kay Holt, 2 Orchard Place #2, Arlington, Ma 02476. If you register via eventbrite or if you want to register by email, please email us with your student's name, grade, school (or status as homeschooled), and your email and phone number in case we need to reach you. The email to use for all MiniMUN related issues is ARMUN2013@gmail.com.
Thank you and see you at MiniMUN III in November!
If you are wondering what comes after MiniMUN for your student, here are some possibilities: A number of schools already have middle school (6th - 8th grade) Model Un clubs where your student could get involved. If your school doesn't have a club but you can get them interested in starting one, Armun is happy to provide assistance to anyone starting a club, and the United Nations Association of Greater Boston also provides technical assistance and professional development to schools starting clubs. Additionally, schools can access the UNICEF USA Global Classroooms curriculum for use in a variety of in-class settings, as well as curriculums from Facing the Future which are carefully designed to meet standards in a number of different subject areas (UNICEF's curriculums are free, Facing the Future's must be purchased both are outstanding). Armun has an independent club for 5th - 8th Graders, the Middle School Model Un & Civic Engagement Club, which is open to all area students of that age without regard to what school they attend or homeschool status. If you are interested in more information about that, simply email us. We also maintain a list of 5th - 8th graders who can't regularly participate in our club but who want to be alerted when we are having in-club debates, doing major events including service projects or going to outside group's events, and so forth, and we are happy to place student's who have been at MiniMUN on this list. Finally, if your student is a fifth grader, they can come to MiniMUN again next year! And when they reach high school, most area high schools, as of this year that includes Arlington High School, offer Model Un and there is also the option of ARMUN's independent high school club. Thanks. Hope that answers some of your questions in advance. Feel free to email with further questions or for more information.
