During Massachusetts' first Breeding Bird Atlas, compiled during the 1970s, ospreys bred in only one place: the Westport River. Today, they are synonymous with the South Shore coastline. Bald eagles, succumbing to the same pesticides that killed ospreys during the 1950s and 1960s, were so far gone they had to be reintroduced to nesting sites in the Quabbin Reservoir area; now, just three decades later, they nest in Plymouth County and winter along the North River and on the Plymouth coast.
