Eagles
Eagles
With five number one singles, fourteen Top 40 hits, and four number one albums, the Eagles were among the most successful recording artists of the 1970s. At the end of the 20th century, two of those albums -- Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) and Hotel California -- ranked among the ten best-selling albums ever, and the popularity of 2007's Long Road Out of Eden proved the Eagles' staying power in the new millenium....
The Prodigy
The Prodigy
The Prodigy navigated the high wire, balancing artistic merit and mainstream visibility with more flair than any electronica act of the 1990s. Ably defeating the image-unconscious attitude of most electronic artists in favor of a focus on nominal frontman Keith Flint, the group crossed over to the mainstream of pop music with an incendiary live experience that approximated the original atmosphere of the British rave scene even while leaning uncomfortably close to arena rock showmanship and punk theatrics....
Emma
Emma
Part of the same mid-'90s Philadelphia psych-pop/space rock scene as Bardo Pond, the Asteroid #4, and Transient Waves, Emma also adds a hint of Joy Division-style darkness to their mellow sound. Basically singer/guitarist Rick Henderson (who also plays keyboards with Eltro, City of Horns, Ashtabula, the Wayward Wind, and others, often under the name Elmer Clayton) with help from bassist Dean McNulty of Chopper, and drummer Ed Farnsworth, Emma has never been a full-time project, but their occasional releases are likely to attract fans of other "Psychedelphia" bands as well as folks fond of Windy & Carl, Amp, or Ghost....
Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder
When Stevland Hardaway Judkins was born prematurely in 1950, the infant's mother and father were no doubt very distraught when their son's retinas detached and he became blind within a few days. The boy's blindness would have no bearing on his future success, however, as he would become a famous, successful, and increasingly innovative musician later in life &#8212 after he changed his name to Stevie Wonder....
The National
The National
Although formed during the post-punk revival of the late '90s, the National took inspiration from a wider set of influences, including country-rock, Americana, indie rock, and Britpop. The lineup began taking shape in Ohio and officially cemented itself in New York, with baritone vocalist Matt Berninger joining forces with two sets of brothers -- Scott (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums), and Aaron (guitar) and Bryce Dessner (guitar)....
