The Novo Tempo experience is evocative of Brazilian pop, but unlike anything you've heard before. Ed Johnson is a master of different musical genres and has a passion for vocal harmony and horn arrangements. His lush, exotic and accessible arrangements blend together to create a vibrant, original, and contemporary jazz style.

As a vocalist, Ed is frequently compared to Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Kenny Rankin, and Michael Franks. Ed excels at scat vocals, frequently teaming with Canadian diva Jennifer Scott for vocalese duets that bring to mind Tania Maria. As a guitarist and bandleader, critics often reference the lushly exotic, accessible sounds of Airto and Flora Purim, and the interplay between vocals and horns are instantly appealing to audiences.
Ed has eight recording projects to his credit, including three with the prinicipal personell of Novo Tempo. Over That Wave, Movimento, and The Other Road have all garnered international acclaim and widespread airplay in the U.S. and abroad. JazzTimes wrote in their review of The Other Road: "This guy with the name Ed Johnson composes some of the finest Brazilian music in the world from his home base in Northern California."
