1. Be knowledgeable about trends in publishing including: what makes authors and manuscripts attractive to publishers.
2. Understand the forces behind decisions editors in Big 6 publishing houses make, and how to use this information in putting together a book proposal.
3. Know alternative avenues writers can take to self publish a hardcover or softcover book and to arrange for its distribution, both via online sales and via orders in bookstores.
4. Know how to help ensure a book reaches its intended audience; know how to grow a platform - and why it is essential to do so.
5. Know how to publish a book as an ebook, and the drawbacks and pluses of ebook publication.

Presenter:
Jessica Hatchigan has taught English and writing at Oakland Community College in Royal Oak, Michigan, and at Wayne State University in Detroit. Her work has appeared in The Writer's Handbook, Contemporary Literary Criticism, The Writer and in Writer's Digest. Jessica has spoken and presented writing workshops across the U.S., at venues including the American Society of Journalists and Authors Annual Writers Conference in New York, the Society of Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) Annual Conference in L.A., the National Speechwriters Conference in Washington,DC,and the Indiana University School of Journalism. She is a published author (McGrawHill; Avon Camelot). Her latest book is How to Write a Pageturner Novel (Nostina Press).
