Furlong's

Furlongs in Lexington - sister to the Louisville Furlongs - is as well-known for its Cajun/Creole cuisine as it is for decor that pays homage to horse racing. Rich and warm like a full-bodied Kentucky bourbon, Furlongs' doors open at 4 p.m. daily, and from that moment on, the bar and dining room are a buzz with activity as patrons partake of classic cocktails, martinis, and fine wines while sharing appetizers of Shrimp Remoulade, Fried Crawfish Tails, and Grilled Andouille Sausage. Among the seafood specialties, favorites include the Shrimp Creole, Stuffed Catfish, Fried Oysters and Broiled Lobster Tails. But Furlongs is equally revered for its BBQ Ribs and prime, hand-cut New York Strips, Ribeyes and Filet Mignon. Grab a seat at the bar and catch the game on HDTV while nursing an imported brew. Or if you're so disposed, sip wine on the outdoor patio and take in the celebrity scene, particularly during racing season when everybody who's anybody makes it a point to swing by Furlongs for cocktails and dinner. Furlongs is now open for lunch and serves brunch on Sundays.

Bad, Bad, Bad

I shake my head when thinking of the dinner my Wife and I had earlier this week. All I can say is there must have been a cafeteria cook behind the line and no culinary trained individual. The food we recieved was bland at best. Furlong's had a reputation for authentic Louisiana cuisine...there was nothing authentic the night we spent there. A large sampler platter greeted us with overcooked sausage, dry stuffed mushrooms, and tasteless catfish bites. Only the crawfish tail tenders had any real taste. Next, the shrimp and grits might just be the worst I have ever had. Five inconsequental shrimp drowned in a very bland sauce and grits were almost comical. Entrees were slightly better. My Wife's boulibasse was no where authentic and the recipe must have just been "made up." I was not even sure the grouper I ordered was the fish that ended up on my plate. Certainly did not taste like grouper. All in all a very, very bad experience. I have worked almost twenty years in the food service industry and have seen alot, but never seen such an all encompassing disappointing experience. I will say this, the service was outstanding, the Gentleman rose well above the stature of his employer.
