The Intergenerational Transmission of Eating Disorders from Mothers to Daughters
Including a video presentation from the Therapeutic Play Nursery for Mothers with Eating Disorders and Their Children

This program examines developmental pathways, intrapsychic mechanisms, and environmental factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of the intergenerational transmission of eating disorders… Show more from mothers to daughters. Literature relevant to the study of eating disordered behavior in childhood will be reviewed. Clinical data from the Therapeutic Play Nursery for Mothers with Eating Disorders and Their Children will be presented, and video footage of nursery sessions and family therapy will be examined to illuminate the psychodynamic pathways of transmission.

Susan P. Sherkow, M.D., is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute and a Supervising Analyst and Instructor in the Child and Adolescent Division of The New York Psychoanalytic Institute, where she teaches courses in Child and Adolescent Development. She is also on the faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry at both Mount Sinai College of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Sherkow has published in Japa and The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child on subjects including eating disorders, diagnosis of sexual abuse, watched play, * stock-still behavior, * and the psychoanalytic treatment of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.
LEARING Objectives:
after attending this workshop, participants should be able
1) to conceptualize the nature of childhood eating disorders from a psychodynamic perspective;
2) to analyze the key role played by internalization and its pathological use in transmission of eating disorders, and
3) to compare typical developmental pathways taken by children of eating disordered mothers.
