Lecutre- African Witchcraft: An International Health Dilemma

Norman Miller.s book, Encounters with Witchcraft: Field Notes from Africa, is the center-piece for this lecture on the meaning and implications of widespread witchcraft and occult beliefs across Africa, including health implications. Topics will include the origins of witchcraft, the modern economic and political uses of witchcraft, human rights, violence and gender, and modern Africa.s attempts to stop witchcraft-based violence. He has been a part-time faculty member at Dartmouth since 1980. His new book Encounters with Witchcraft: Field Notes from Africa is a trade book, a memoir of his life as a correspondent, field researcher and teacher in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda (Suny Press, 2012). There is an exhibit on Norman.s book at the Baker Berry Library, main floor, entitled African Witchcraft and Healing that may be viewed before the talk.
