The Elixir of Love

UNLV Opera Theater is proud to present Gaetano Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love” at 7:30 pm on Friday March 15 and Saturday March 16, and at 1 pm on Sunday March 17 in Artemus Ham Hall at the UNLV Performing Arts Center. Linda Lister directs, with Taras Krysa conducting the UNLV Symphony Orchestra.

Donizetti’s classic opera is updated to a contemporary Vegas casino in UNLV Opera Theater’s production. Nemorino (a maintenance man) pines in vain for the beautiful but stubborn Adina (a mixologist). When… Show more Adina agrees to marry Belcore (a flashy poker player), Nemorino buys a so-called “Elixir of Love” from self-help guru/quack Dr. Dulcamara to win the heart of Adina before it is too late. Little does he know the “elixir” is simply alcohol, which is a common Vegas elixir indeed. Sung in Italian with English supertitles, the opera features the famous aria “Una furtiva lagrima,” made famous by legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti.

The cast includes Isabella Ivy and Lindsay Cunningham as Adina, Jonathan Mancheni and Alfredo Martirena as Nemorino, Jonathan Napier-Morales and Elliot Matheny as Belcore, Kathleen McVicker and Bonita Bunt as Gianetta, and Nathan Van Arsdale as Dr. Dulcamara. The production also features the UNLV Chamber Chorale under the direction of David Weiller. In addition, “The Elixir of Love” showcases the work of student designers from the UNLV Theatre Department as well as a Kaileigh O’Neill, a student in the UNLV Dance Department.
