Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium, capacity 32,580 was built in 1950 and remains one of the top football facilities in America. A beautiful artificial turf, installed in the summer of '05 sets off this breathtaking stadium, which at an elevation of 7,220 feet is the highest Division I football stadium in America.
With the crowd noise, elevation and outstanding Cowboy teams, Wyoming's home field has long been one of the most feared places to play in college football. The Cowboys have won over 69 percent of their games at War Memorial Stadium. The stadium is no stranger on the national scene, as CSTV, the Mtn., Versus, ESPN, ABC and ESPN2 annually broadcast Cowboy games from this magnificent facility.
"The War" opened on Sept. 16, 1950, with a 61-13 win over Montana State, followed by an official dedication the following week. The stadium's original capacity was 20,000. It was expanded to 25,500 in 1970, and the seating was increased to 33,500 in 1978. Following reconstruction of the west upper seating in the summer of '04, the current capacity is now 32,580.
