Animals assisted therapy has traditionally been used with children. It has been demonstrated to be an effective form of treatment for children with a variety of issues, including: trauma & abuse, development challenges, autistic spectrum, attachment issues, Adhd. Â However, when working with animals in a professional setting there are many considerations that involve the needs and welfare of the client, and the needs and welfare of the animal.
This didactic and experiential workshop will provide… Show more attendees with practical information necessary to start developing competency skills in animal assisted therapy when working with children and teenagers (as required for malpractice coverage, as well as general ethical practice). This workshop with focus primarily on the integration of dogs in therapy, but will also discuss how horses, cats and other small animals can be integrated.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the unique benefits of animals when working with children in a variety of settings
Evaluate your animal’s character and skill set in terms of their appropriateness for work with clients in different settings
Matching characteristics of the animal (animal type, physical & personality traits) with the professional environment and client population
Understand health and welfare issues for children and animals in various settings
Understand the legal and ethical issues when working with animals in a professional setting
Develop animal-involved interventions and strategies aimed at particular treatment

About our Presenters:
Linda Chassman, PhD., LMFT is the director of Animal Assisted Therapy Programs of Colorado (Aatpc). She has worked as a psychotherapist for over 25 years and has incorporated animals into her practice since 1987. She presently works with her cat Samantha and her certified therapy dog Rupert.
Ellen Kinney, Ma, LPC, NCC is the Manager of Clinical Services at Aatc. She and her dog Sasha have been implementing creative and innovative counseling interventions with her clients for several years.
