The Loft at UCSD

ArtPower director Martin Wollenstein wanted to create a space at UCSD where pop culture and emerging art could collide and form new combinations, all the while facilitating interaction among patrons.

Modeled after “Joe's Pub,” an intimate, swank venue of New York City's Public Theater, Loft curator Elizabeth Bradshaw calls it the only college club of its kind in America. Still, the Loft can rightfully be considered the gem in the design-conscious and energy efficient new Price Center East expansion, which aims to create a late-night urban space to enliven the life of the study-burdened students and give them a sense of neighborhood belonging.

The Loft's interior is a pleasant and somewhat startling surprise. The ambiance is chic, stylish and sophisticated. The overall theme is a modern take on art deco. Cushions and walls are an odd pea green, but maybe that is supposed to go with the eco-friendly theme of the entire building.

All the seating is movable and able to be rearranged depending on the event. The stage is elevated front right and there is a screen for the viewing of films. The room is designed to accommodate 150-175 people, but it was apparent on opening night it would be more comfortable if limited to 100.
