This extraordinary novel looks at Cairo society from 1917 through the 1950s. A family of a middle-class merchant runs his family strictly according to the Qur'an and directs his own behavior for his desires. While his wife and two daughters remain cloistered at home and his three sons live in fear of his harsh will, he nightly explores the pleasures of Cairo. Mahfouz is the first Arabic writer to win the Nobel Prize. Meetings are held on the 4th Monday of the month in the library at 7:00 pm.
