Aloha, and welcome to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, located on Mokapu Peninsula on the windward side of Oahu, approximately 12 miles northeast of Honolulu. Whether seen from the vantage points of the steep-sided Koolaupoko mountain range, from the air or from the open sea, Mokapu Peninsula stands out as a place of great beauty. Before the Hawaiian Island’s exposure to the Western world in 1778, the spiritual beliefs and cultural practices of the Hawaiian people were intricately bound to the physical landscape of this place.
This website is designed to help you experience the history of Mokapu Peninsula, and learn about MCBH, Kaneohe Bay at the same time. Points of interest are explained in corresponding narratives. Five described locations are accessible to visitors; others are natural features, historic locations or work venues for Marines, Sailors and civilian employees. (NOTE: Much of the text for this website was compiled by Garcia and Associates under contract to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pacific Ocean Division, for a brochure, entitled, "Mokapu: A Journey in Time." The MCBH Environmental Department provided the funding for that publication, and has reviewed the content of this one, to ensure its accuracy.)
