COURSE Description
This 2-day course will advance the skill and knowledge of physical therapists (PTs) who treat women during and after pregnancy. An exploration of the etiology and the pathophysiology of high risk pregnancy and birth related injuries will compliment psychomotor ( hands on *) training in examination and treatment of musculoskeletal impairments related to both. Evaluation, treatment, and management of the pregnant athlete will prepare PTs to care for women who wish remain active and competitive during pregnancy. Required home study prior to attending the course will prepare the participant for an intensive interactive instructional experience. Course content is evidence based, and will promote the use of the most reliable tests, measures, and interventions.
This course is the second of two courses, Ob1 and Ob2, designed to give the practicing clinician a comprehensive knowledge base in obstetric physical therapy evaluation and treatment. Successful completion of testing will result in a Certificate of Completion of Ob2. Successful completion of both Ob1 and Ob2 will result in a Brooks Certificate of Academic Achievement in Pregnancy and Postpartum Physical Therapy (Brooks Ob-Caapp).
Course Objectives
Examination/Evaluation
All participants will describe the physiologic, anatomic, and psychological changes related to injuries sustained in childbirth and how they affect neuromuscular dysfunction, evaluation and treatment.
Physical Therapists will perform an evaluation of a pregnant patient with a high risk diagnosis, of women with birth related injuries, and of a pregnant athlete.
Diagnosis/Prognosis
All participants will develop functional goals for musculoskeletal impairments in high risk pregnancy and in postpartum based on a systematic interview and examination of the patient.
4. Physical Therapists will differentiate between musculoskeletal and medical diagnoses based on the subjective and objective evaluation of a patient with high risk pregnancy diagnosis and a postpartum patient.
5. Physical Therapists will identify injuries associated with pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
6. Physical Therapists will screen postpartum patients for depression and urinary incontinence.
Intervention
All participants will develop strategies for treatment of musculoskeletal impairments related to high risk pregnancy and to birth injuries.
All participants will describe physiological monitoring and exercise progression for the pregnant athlete.
Physical Therapists will perform manual therapy treatment for musculoskeletal impairments of the injured woman after childbirth, and of the pregnant athlete.
INTENDED FOR:
Physical Therapists, physical therapist assistants (PTAs) may attend this course. Physical therapist assistants (PTAs) must be accompanied by a physical therapist colleague. Instruction in examination techniques and treatment skills is a key component of this course. PTAs may observe the examination and manual therapy labs and/or participate as a simulated patient. Participants will be tested before, throughout, and after the course to demonstrate learning and obtain a course certificate.

Expectations Of Participants
This course is only open to physical therapists and physical therapist assistants who have completed a Level 1 Pregnancy Physical Therapy course of at least 1.3 CEUs.
Participants are expected to complete the required home study prior to the course. All home study materials will be e-mailed to participants upon registration. All participants will be tested on the home study.
All participants are expected to participate in all testing during the course. Participant who do not pass testing but attend the entire course will be granted a Certificate of Attendance. Participants who pass the testing and attend the entire course will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Participants must be prepared to fully engage in the interactive labs in this course. Please come prepared to participate as both clinician and patient. Male or female participants, who cannot, for any reason, participate as lab subjects need to provide their own lab partners. Pregnant participants must bring a signed permission note from her physician to participate.
This course Does Not include internal (intra-vaginal or intra-rectal) pelvic floor lab work.
Participants are expected to stay through the entire course in order to receive the most benefit from the course, and to earn all of the CEUs for the course. Anyone needing to miss more than one hour will have the number of CEUs altered on his or her Certificate, and may need to make up work in order to obtain a Certificate of Completion ( at the instructor s discretion)
