Like the islands themselves, HAPA’s music is an amalgam of influences ranging from ancient Polynesian rhythms and chants to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fisherman and Mexican cowboys. Add to this a dose of American acoustic folk/rock, and you have what has been described as the “most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawai'ian music the world knows!” (Maui Times) These disparate ingredients, blended together musically in the Pacific, emote the unique flavor of what Hawai'i.

The Hawaiian duo Hapa teamed singers/guitarists Barry Flanagan and Keli‘i Kaneali‘i, who first met in 1983; deriving their name from a pidgin slang expression for "ethnically mixed, " Kaneali‘i (a Honolulu native) and Flnagan (a product of New Jersey who relocated to Maui in 1979) then spent the next decade honing their distinctive sound, an update of traditional Polynesian textures and rhythms incorporating elements of pop and worldbeat....
