Bill T. Jones remains one of America's most influential choreographers and dance makers. His pot-stirring "Still/Here" was seen at the Barclay more than ten years ago. His exquisite company makes its much-anticipated return with a major new work whose title is drawn from Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address.
Fondly Do We Hope... Fervently Do We Pray finds Mr. Jones seeking a way to reconcile the view of Lincoln he had as a young boy growing up during the civil rights struggle and as a mid-life artist who "has very few heroes." He is investigating the myriad meanings of Lincoln, challenging -- and celebrating -- the lasting contributions of this great man.
This personal portrait was recently commissioned by Chicago's Ravinia Festival and will premiere there just prior to its performance at the Barclay. The company regards this work as the most ambitious project in its 25-year history and right for the times.
