The color is black; the tone is somber. We listen to the Isaiah reading -- see the servant exalted, marred (I can hear the hammer), borne our infirmities (I hear the hammer again), wounded for our transgressions, led to slaughter (the hammer yet again). We read the psalm, hear of Jesus’ death (I hear the rock grinding into place). We read the solemn collects and adore the wooden cross. Lastly, we say three special anthems and a concluding prayer, then leave in silence.
