Whoopi Goldberg launched onto the performing arts scene in a big way after her acting chops were noticed in her own one-woman stage show. A director took liked Whoopi and asked her to bring the show to Broadway. While there in the mid-1908s, she apparently caught the eye of movie director Steven Spielberg, who was getting ready to shoot The Color Purple. Goldberg was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance. She won role after role and received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her part in the movie Ghost. She performed a series of HBO specials in the late 80s and continues to make audiences laugh.
