You will learn how to do it primitively should you ever find yourself without tools but we will build the bows with rasps and our knives. After completing this class you will be able to build your own custom works of killing art and have at least one completed bow to take home with you; and maybe two if you hustle!
The course will take place over 3 days and from the first morning you will begin roughing out your stave and getting it to its rough dimensions. You will construct at least one complete self bow from start to scratch and if there is time left then you will begin construction of another. We will also cover how to make arrows, creating beautiful designs in the wood, sealing, string construction and much more! Students will have the option of choosing from two different types of woods: Osage Orange and Hickory Staves and staves will not be included in the cost of the course. If properly cared for and constructed you may get a lifetime’s use out of your primitive bow. All students are guaranteed to complete at least one complete bow under the tutelage of the best primitive bow makers in the country! This course is required for the wilderness survival standard certification and is taught in all our Intensive Survival Instructor programs.
Items Needed: Overnight camping gear (or stay in local hotel), fixed blade knife, outdoor clothing, bug repellant (seasonal)
Material Fees: Student will be required to purchase a stave. These staves are pre-dried for two years and in perfect working condition. Stave prices will vary from location due to s&h rates. Hickory Stave $65 or $125 Osage Orange. Course will include any other materials needed to finish bow.
