The Old Mill Inn, situated at 18 Horsham Road on the corner of York and Horsham, has recently been renovated by its current owners, John and Barbara Reinhold. General George Washington bought grain from the Old Mill and the building became strategically significant in the American Revolution. Of note, it is the oldest surviving structure in Hatboro (circa 1719). The Inn was used as a lookout point to alert Washington and his troops of the advancement of the British army from the North, playing a critical role in the Battle of Crooked Billet. Historically interesting, the former miller, a British sympathizer, was said to be hanged outside of his nearby home. Rich with history, serving the village as a gristmill for almost 200 years, the building's legacy of service continues. In its role as a restaurant, it has played dinner host to many longtime Hatboro residents. Particularly sweet in hosting continuing traditions, some residents have celebrated their wedding at the Old Mill and returned years later to embrace the location again for their fiftieth anniversary. The Inn preserves the stately presence in the banquet area with “Mr. Moose,†an incredible monument of hunting success, who has watched over patrons for some 40 years. In a tribute to the preferences of newer generations, the owners are delighted to announce completion of an outdoor deck that will provide access to nature and enjoyment of the adjacent Pennypack Creek. For those with a predisposition to the sixth sense, there is anecdotal evidence to encourage a possible exploration of these mysteries. Amidst its stone walls that seem to whisper the knowledge of prior dramas, The Old Mill Inn continues in a legacy of providing “grist†for the community, offering an opportunity to enhance dining pleasure, to be surrounded by a sense of the past, to listen to musical sounds that can elevate the human spirit, and to have a forward view to new traditions.
