I was dying for one of Carl's jr's six million dollar burgers after seeing the advertising blitz, so I went through their drive through in Hanford, CA on New Years Eve. As I placed my order it began to show up on the screen next to the outdoor menu (to assure an accurate order I assumed), only what appeared on the screen was priced higher than what it was listed at on the drive-through menu I was ordering from.
I told the man that I was looking at the price on the menu just three feet away from me, and it showed it for less money than what he was going to charge me for it according to the screen. He said 'well that price is wrong, I'll have to change it later.' I told him that I expected to get the item at the price it was advertised for on the menu and he said 'No! you'll pay the price that shows up here on my screen.'
What I expected to hear was something like 'I'm sorry for the misunderstanding sir, and you'll only be charged what it says on our menu board.'
Instead I got a sarcastic jerkwad who needs to learn not only that the customer is almost always right, but that if you advertise something at a particular price your customers are entitled by law to buy it at that listed price.
I drove right through the line. There is no way I was going to bite into a sandwich after an employee or perhaps even a manager, displayed that kind of rude behavior - because there's no telling if they spit in it or what they might have put on it after that.
I wrote to Carl's Jr. and related the incident exactly as it happened, pointing out that that is what A&P supermarkets used to do and that's why they went out of business. It's called 'bait and switch' and there's no telling how many other items may be on the Carl's Jr. menu that they're cleverly charging people extra for. And if they get caught; 'oops, that price is wrong and we'll change it later.'
I never heard back from Carl's Jr. headquarters after writing them. And because I never heard back from them, I have to wonder if these tactics may be a common occurrence, and that customer satisfaction, if it happens, is only a by-product rather than a standard.
The economy is tough and there are a lot of other places to eat out there who would have responded appropriately on the local level and corporately, so I'll never spend another dime at a Carl's Junior again.
