Spirit of Christmas Past: 4 Centuries of Christmas in New England
Friday, Dec 5 10:30a

Hamilton-Wenham Public Library
Hamilton,
MA
Christmas was outlawed in the 17th c. but by the beginning of the 21st c. many customs we take for granted as part of the current celebrations are actually a product of more recent history. Ken Turino, of Historic New England, looks at how Christmas was transformed from a rowdy celebration to a family centered event. Topics discussed are how the Christmas tree became popular, halls were decked, and Santa Clause came to town. Funded by the Friends, free & open to the public.
