Rome & Pompeii: Discovering & Preserving the Past
Friday, Nov 7 10:30a
Hamilton-Wenham Public Library
Hamilton,
MA
Scott Smith explores the archaeology of Rome, the “Eternal City,” and Pompeii, the town that was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, and discusses the problems of preserving these ancient ruins. Great monuments that symbolize the past are threatened (the Colosseum by frigid temperatures in 2011-12) or completely destroyed (The House of the Gladiator by torrential rains in 2010). Scott Smith is UNH's Associate Professor of Classics. Funded by the Friends, free and open to the public.
