SPEAKERS
Ted Michalos Bas, Cpa is a trustee, co founder and President of Hoyes, Michalos and Associates. Before becoming an accountant and trustee Ted worked as a retail manager, a fast food manager and truck driver, attending university as a mature student after a decade in the “real world.” Ted has worked with thousands of people experiencing debt pressure. In this session he will discuss what collectors can and can’t do under the Collection Agency Act; what it means to be judgement proof; what bankruptcy is and the alternatives; statistics of who is at risk and debt warning signs.
Frank Flynn is a former senior enforcement officer with Canada Revenue Agency (Cra). Mr. Flynn now operates Taxpayer Relief Letters, a niche consulting business specializing in Cra collection policy and procedures. In an environment of precarious employment, many people are working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Even modest income from multiple sources can result in tax debt. Seniors can also be suseptible to tax liability when supplementing their CPP and Oas pensions with other sources of income. Cra has special powers and tax debt can be particularily difficult to pay down when clients are already challenged with low incomes. This workshop will help to provide insight into navigating the Cra system and will explain the various categories under the Taxpayer Relief Program.
Kaila Basilij is the Marketing Director at SmartSAVER ; a creative marketing initiative developed by the Omega Foundation, focused on helping lower-income families to save for their children’s post-secondary education using Registered Education Savings Plans and the Canada Learning Bond. This session will provide the nuts and bolts of Resp education, enrolment and facilitation. Interactive discussion will offer front line service providers opportunities to discuss how Resp education and Canada Learning Bond can be accessed. A special scholarship announcement unique to the Guelph Wellington area will be announced.
John Mortimer is from the Student Financial Assistance Branch at the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The Osap process has recently changed. This session will provide an overview of these changes and their impact on qualifying, managing and repaying student loans. Options for clients struggling to pay their student loans will be reviewed. Information on grants and bursaries and appeal processes will also be presented.
