Whitwell, Tennessee is a most unlikely place to build a Holocaust memorial, much less one that would attract the attention of a president, become the subject of a book and award-winning documentary and also become an international cause.
Yet it was there that a group of eighth-graders, in response to an after-school program about racial and religious tolerance, collected 11 million paper clips (one for each soul exterminated by the Nazis) and erected a school memorial to remember every victim.
