Degas, Wine and Impressionist Painting: The Blue Dancers in Acrylics

Students will be led through the steps of creating Degas’ Blue Dancers . This event starts promptly at 6pm at Foothills ArtCenter with a tour of the Degas: The Private Impressionist exhibition and then you travel to the delightful Art on Brix studio where you will learn to create a Degas Masterwork using acrylics in a set-by-step and engaging… Show more teacher-led evening while enjoying a delicious glass of fine French wine. I paint primarily in oils and soft pastel but also enjoy venturing into inks, pencil and marker and other mediums for exploration and to study technique and effects. I usually begin with a marker notan in my sketchbook to make decisions on composition and value. The pastel paintings begin on sanded paper with a loose sketch often followed by an underpainting in oil washes (my favorite, even under my pastels) or pastel or watercolor washes, then layers of hard and soft pastel on top. I've always been moved by time spent outdoors; the breeze, crispness of the air, movement in the grasses and trees, along with the changes in temperature, air and light amaze and re-center me. My favorite thing is to paint en plein air. The more I observe and paint, the more I see that I hadn't been able to see before, particularly related to subtle temperature and value changes, less obvious local colors and reflected light.
