Maundy Thursday - Service of the Tenebrae
The Service of the Tenebrae follows a tradition of the Church from the 8th century. From Latin, the Tenebrae means "darkness" commemorating the final hours of Christ's life on earth, suffering death upon the cross. Readings of the Passion of Our Lord are compiled from the Gospel. As the candles are extinguished, they symbolize the fading loyalty of the disciples and friends of Jesus. The gradual darkening of the church portrays the diminishing light of the world as Christ was departing from it.
