Sylvia Plath and the Dream Kitchen: Reinventing Domesticity
Professor Bryant’s talk will show how Sylvia Plath reinvented domestic poetry with her extraordinary depictions of household objects, routines, and relationships. She will discuss several poems from Ariel, connecting them to relevant images from Ladies’ Home Journal and television ads from the 1950s. Bryant’s insights come from her recent book, Women’s Poetry and Popular Culture, and from her “Desperate Domesticity” courses at UF.
