The Wall is a rock opera centered around the character "Pink," based on Waters' personal life struggles, which factored into Pink's mental isolation from society, figuratively referred to as "The Wall."
Incredibly successful upon its release, The Wall jumped to #1 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. in its fourth week. Its worldwide sales are estimated at 15 million copies, and in the U.S. it has achieved platinum 23 times and is Pink Floyd's second best-selling album in the U.S. after The Dark Side of the Moon.
In 2003 Rolling Stone listed The Wall as #87 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
A film version of The Wall was released in 1982 entitled Pink Floyd The Wall, directed by Alan Parker and starring Bob Geldof.
