Local residents are preparing to participate in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Foxboro, which will run 6:00 p.m. Friday, June 20 – 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 2.
The cancer survivor’s lap, taking place Friday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m., will feature survivors taking a victory lap around the track. Also, highlighting the evening is a luminaria ceremony, held Friday at 9:00 p.m., which honors cancer survivors and those we have lost to the disease. Luminaria will line the track and continue to burn throughout the night, reminding participants of the incredible importance of their contributions.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s largest signature activity as well as the most successful national fundraiser. It is a unique event that offers communities an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Relays are 12 to 24 hours in length and go overnight. Teams of 8 to 15 people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking, jogging, or running around a track or path. Teams are encouraged to camp out in tents and enjoy the great music, food, and camaraderie of the event. In Massachusetts this year, 89 Relay events are planned.
Dollars raised during Relay For Life help support American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy, and patient services. Programs include Reach to Recovery®, providing one-on-one support for breast cancer patients; and Road to Recovery® which offers free transportation for patients to and from their treatments. Relay For Life also helps maintain the American Cancer Society’s toll-free 24-hour cancer information line 1-800-ACS-2345.
