Bella Sorella to perform in Fairfield
The award-winning soprano ensemble Bella Sorella will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13 at Fairfield Community United Methodist Church.
Bella Sorella is composed of sisters-in-law Nova and Susanna Jiménez, accompanied by pianist Ed Goldfarb, who also is the music director at the church, and Joyce Lee on violin.
The vocalists, who combine classical and contemporary styles, met at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where they became roommates. The young women worked at a local café and often sang during their shifts at the request of customers. That eventually turned into Sunday afternoon concerts, which eventually led to larger venues. The two later moved to California to pursue their singing careers. They married brothers, which is how they arrived at their stage name Bella Sorella, meaning “beautiful sister” in Italian.
The Los Angeles Music Awards unanimously named Bella Sorella the 2007 Vocal Group of the Year.
Goldfarb joined the ensemble as musical director, arranger and accompanist last spring. A graduate of UC-Berkeley, he was a co-writer and music director of San Francisco’s “Beach Blanket Babylon” for more than a decade. He has also collaborated with filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, and recording artists k.d. Lang and Boyz II Men, among others. He became the music director at CUMC in 2006.
Lee, who joined Bella Sorella in 2008, is an alumna of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She performs regularly with the Vallejo Symphony as assistant concertmaster, as well as other Bay Area symphonies.
The members just completed a Pacific Northwest tour, which took them to Oregon, Washington, and the upper reaches of California.
There is no admission charge for the Fairfield concer; however donations would be appreciated. Some of the proceeds from CD sales will benefit Habitat for Humanity. CUMC is at the corner of Fairfield and Kensington avenues, Fairfield. For more information, call the church at 707-426-2944.
