John Henry's opened in August of 1992. The concept for the club came from Bruce Hartnell of The Detonators who wanted to take the Eugene basement music scene into a permanent above ground location. The space at 136 East 11th had been Club Hollywood that folded several months earlier. Hartnell, Al Jenkins and Tom Tracey renovated the space with the assistance of many local musicians. Lucy Lizzard handled the booking, Malcolm Conover provided the cash register, John Henry got behind the bar and things were underway. Some guy named Charles showed up on a balloon-tire bicycle one afternoon and took over back door security. At some point he was renamed Jivan and drank so much PBR that his appendix filled with beer and blew itself up. Revaud cleaned up the mess.
