These living legends of gospel music have been celebrated by the Grammys and National Endowment for the Arts with lifetime achievement awards. Formed at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939, the group toiled in relative obscurity for 40 years until their breakout appearance in an award winning musical in 1980.
