The vintage Hartz Building on Broadway across from the Detroit Opera House has been handsomely renovated and restored to house the spin-off of the Rochester Mills and Royal Oak breweries. The bones of the old building, including rosy bricks, are evident, giving the two-floor setting a distinction a new building wouldn't provide.\n What is especially notable about all three of the breweries is that food quality has not been overlooked in a quest for good beer. The menu fits nicely into the brew pub setting, with beer-battered fish and chips, blackened catfish, beer cheese soup made with Detroit Ale and Muenster cheese, shepherd's pie and barbecued ribs, not surprisingly basted with the house product too. Brick oven pizzas come on beer grain pizza dough as well as the traditional kind. Those who want just snacks will find them on the appetizer, soup and salad list which includes black bean and asiago cheese dips with house made tortilla chips, Buffalo wings, and Cajun chicken strips with honey mustard sauce. Anyone thirsty?
