Making the sort of neo-traditionalist country that brings to mind the rowdy glory of David Allan Coe, Jason Boland and his band uprooted from their Oklahoma home and made their splash in Texas. Their blue collar country caught on with locals, and their genuine backroad experiences led to hedonistic tracks like "Drinkin' Song" and "When I'm Stoned....
Jason Boland is one of the leading lights of the Red Dirt scene in country music, a grass-roots movement mixing honky-tonk, outlaw, and contemporary country, powered by constant touring. The Red Dirt sound has two homes, Texas and Oklahoma, and Boland and his band The Stragglers hail from the latter, but moved to the former to make their fortune....
The Texas-based modern-day honky tonker Jack Ingram first carved out a niche for himself in the bars and roadhouses between Dallas and Houston. By the mid-'90s after extensive touring with his Beat Up Ford Band, he had released two well-received independent albums and had opened for artists like Merle Haggard and Mark Chesnutt....
Stoney LaRue plays music that combines the rootsy, emotionally honest sound of country with the beer-drinking swagger of heartland rock and a dash of the moody undercurrents of the blues. LaRue was born in Taft, TX, to a musical family -- his father played bass in a number of local bands -- and he grew up listening to the country and Southern rock that would inform his later work....
